Untamed Florescence
2024- Paper Lamps
Exhibited at Object Rotterdam
Inspired by the time-lapse photography of flower growth, which shows
the dramatic force behind their growth countering the common perception of
flowers as 'delicate' and 'ephemeral', the work extracted the momentum of flower
growth to give shapes to the lamps. Samples of colors and textures were taken
from a variety of flowers, yet the final design only demonstrates their traces
of growth instead of the figurative shapes. The material of paper shaped
against gravity injects a sense of force and wildness into the design, making
it an untamable version of household plants.
The
production of the lamps also uses discarded metal from local Eindhoven. As a
material not pregnant with life, these metal pieces not only firmly ground the
lamps, but further enhance the imaginative perspective of the design: Life
bursts forth from unexpected places.
